THE HISTORY OF FINLAND STARTED long before independence in 1917. The administration was built up under Swedish rule and many important steps towards creating a distinctively Finnish culture were taken during the period as a Grand Duchy of Russia (1809–1917). In this concert the Helsinki Chamber Choir performs many forgotten and unknown treasures. German-born Fredrik Pacius is known as the father of Finnish music life and composer of the national anthem, but figures such as Ludvig Kiljander are totally unknown, though he was one of the first to write choral music setting texts in Finnish. Jean Sibelius is presented as part of a historical chain together with his teachers and pupils.
