Nein zur Lebensangst

Carlo Gesualdo and Erik Bergman: two composers, three thousand kilometres and four centuries apart, each pushing the boundaries of the musical language of his time, and each fascinated by the complexity of human emotions.  This afternoon concert brings together the raw intimacy of Gesualdo’s late madrigals and Bergman’s powerful choral textures, whilst the exciting and dynamic baritone Herman Wallén delights in his linguistic skills, performing in four languages as singer and speaker.

The lines of each section of the choir were straight and clear, as if played by instruments, and yet soft and flexible, supporting an unbroken sense of breathing. Each group sang with pure intonation and the resonance between the voices took on a life of its own, so that the whole space was filled with ringing colours.
