John Dunstable Gaude Virgo salutata

Salve scema sanctitatis
Vassos Nicolaou Ison
(HKK commission)

From the Eton Choirbook:
John Browne Stabat Mater
Hugh Kellyk Gaude flore virginale

Vassos Nicolaou’s Ison was commissioned by the Helsinki Chamber Choir in association with the Embassy of Cyprus to mark the Mediterranean island nation’s EU Presidency in the second half of 2012. His work refers to the isorhythmic techniques used by medieval composers including John Dunstable, two of whose motets open the concert. A pair of works from the famous Eton Choirbook complete the programme of James Wood’s welcome return to Helsinki.

The work with them was exciting and efficient. They have a particular ability to adapt themselves to a different sound and aesthetic conception. Their flexibility and enthusiasm gave me the the possibility to work in-depth because of the individual human, vocal and musical qualities of each singer.
